How to Build a Medieval Castle
How cool is this? The Chateau de Guedelon, in Burgundy, France, is a new medieval castle. Say what? That's right: the castle was started in 1998 and is being built entirely by hand using medieval techniques. The stone is quarried from the site, the nails are made by blacksmiths right then and there, and they even make their own mortar! I love how the project is reviving ancient skills, and scholars are fascinated by the small historical mysteries that are solved by seeing the hands-on process. Best of all, the architects had to invent a historical "owner," so that the design would have some soul!Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » |

Make it a Maker Weekend
To quote Golden Girl Sophia, "Picture it: Detroit 2010." It's sounding like lots of folks are gearing up to head to the greater Detroit area for Maker Faire and I couldn't be prouder. As I found out when I went to Maker Faire in San Mateo, this isn't a one-hour activity. You'll most likely spend your whole day at the faire. But if you decided to make it a Maker Weekend, here are some of my favorite spots in the area to eat, pick up a goodie, and get inspired. It's hard to pick just a few!Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in Maker Faire | Digg this!

Back to School Bazaar
It's that time of year again for new backpacks and lunch bags as we head Back to School! Here's a collection of some great indie finds in this month's Bazaar.Lunch KitThis nicely designed set has everything you need for stylish lunches on the go: a set of reuseable utensils, five cloth napkins, and BPA-free plastic food compartments all tucked into a handmade bag sewn by Becky of Glue and Glitter. The fabrics for the bags and napkins are all sourced from recycled remnants, and you can choose from several color combinations, or design a super-customized lunch kit based on your own favorite colors and designs - I loved this blue and white owl appliqué.As Becky points out, along with skipping the disposable forks, napkins and containers you'd get with take-out food, at an average of $7 per lunch you can save up to $1700 a year packing your own healthy options - very inspiring!Lunch kit, $45-55, by Glue and GlitterKnow It All PencilsThis brilliant set of six colorful Number 2 pencils stamped with handy tips (like water's boiling point and the year women won the right to vote in the USA) are sure to bring you an extra round of good luck and good grades! They come packaged in a cute 5-by-8-inch stamped muslin drawstring bag.If academic tips aren't your thing, you can also find cooking or California-themed pencil sets in the paperpastries Etsy shop, along with a sturdy metal pencil sharpener for good measure.Know It All Pencils, $11, by paperpastriesRead the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in Bazaar | Digg this!

Recipe: Baked Cumin Lime Tortilla Chips
By Katie GoodmanI have a weakness for chips and salsa. Not so much the chips, because they're just a medium to get to the salsa. That is, until I started making my own tortilla chips. Now I enjoy the chips just as much as the salsa. Of course there are times when store bought is more convenient time-wise for me, but I do prefer the homemade version in general. They are so yummy, and they're probably better for you than store bought because the sodium content and fat are completely up to you! I like to add a little lime juice and cumin for extra flavor, but if you prefer plain salted chips, just skip those steps on the recipe or try and experiment with other flavors.Download the Recipe PDF Right click to save the PDF to your desktop.
