Wedding Wildflowers in Progress
Last night I worked until dark with a team of women creating a flower arch for Leandra's wedding. While I can't spoil the surprise and post early photos of the final results, I thought I would share some shots of the materials and the process. The structure of the arch are boughs of bamboo, and the flowers themselves are set into floral foam and then wired to the bamboo. The materials themselves were grown in a nearby garden, and picked fresh yesterday. I've added a few more shots of the flowers and setting to my flickr page, and will have a full recap of the wedding next week! Read this article | Comment on this article blog.craftzine.com |

How-To: Gourd Lanterns
By Diane GillelandHard-shell gourds, sometimes called calabash gourds, are some of the world's first cultivated plants. They are harvested from their vines in the fall and then air-dried for several months. When a gourd is fully dry inside and out, it forms a woody shell that can be cut with simple tools.Cultures all over the world fashion hard-shell gourds into vessels or musical instruments. Here, we've turned them into festive outdoor lanterns, using a drill to create patterns for light to shine through.Note: This project is fairly messy, making it a good outdoor build.MaterialsWaterHard-shell gourd A good source online is Welburn Gourd Farm.Mineral oilNewspaperPencilScrubbing spongeString of Christmas lightsSurgical maskBucketLarge spoonHandheld drill with various drill bitsPumpkin-carving tool kit like those found at Yankee HarvestSmall paring knifeGo to MAKE: Projects for the full articleAbout the Author:Diane Gilleland produces CraftyPod, a blog and bi-weekly podcast about making stuff.
