Design Space Q+A: MINE
Today kicks off our CRAFT Design Space Q+A which will take you inside the creative minds and studios of four design mavens based in San Francisco. We loved getting a glimpse behind the scenes of each person's creative process, as well as drool over their collection of design books, tools, and knick-knacks. In this digital age, we also love the tactile so we thought it would be extra fun to have each person give us their answers on paper. Our first stop this week is with graphic designer, educator, and writer Christopher Simmons of MINE ...Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | blog.craftzine.com |
Using ThingLink's Photo Tagging Tool
Thinglink just released its new photo tagging tool! Thinglink, which calls itself a "conversational product catalog," and allows users to share information about objects in photos and follow their favorite designers, had been in private beta for a while (founder Ulla-Maaria Engestrom was a columnist for the Craft print mag). This photo tagging tool adds a wonderful new dimension. I've used the tags here to add information about the plants in my veggie garden as well as sharing links to where you can buy some of the seeds or other items. I can also see this working really well for crafters who want to link directly to materials online in a tutorial, or who want to show a bunch of different wares together, with links to an online marketplace. (You could create a beautiful still life with a framed print, a ceramic bowl, a woven placemat, and a vintage napkin, each linked to its product page or information about its history.) It's a wonderful way to add layers of richness and history to an image! I'll be using this tool going forward when I have extra information to share about the things I'm showing; let me know what you think!Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in Photography | Digg this! blog.craftzine.com |

Maker Faire CRAFT Demo Profile: Anna of Mochimochi Land
World Maker Faire New York is this weekend, and we've put together a full schedule for of awesome demos for both days at the CRAFT booth. Each day this week, we'll profile one of the folks who will be presenting. Be sure to mark your schedule and head to the CRAFT booth for all the fun!Presenter: Anna of Mochimochi LandProject: Toy Knitting TricksDay/Time: Saturday at 2 PMTell us about what you'll be demonstrating at the CRAFT booth at Maker Faire:I'll be showing my toy knitting tips and tricks. Many knitters are a little intimidated by knitting toys, but once you know some basics about using double-pointed needles and some seaming tricks, you can tackle fun and quick toys! If you are also participating in the BUST Craftacular, tell us about what you'll be showcasing there: I won't be in the Craftacular, but I'll have a table at the Hall of Science library. I'll have my book Knitting Mochimochi there, along with samples of all the huggable toys you can make from the patterns in it. How did you get started with crafting?I wasn't really into crafting until I spent a year in Japan as a high school exchange student - my host sisters taught me how to knit a scarf. Then in college my boyfriend's mom (now my mother-in-law) inspired me to do more knitting and all kinds of other crafts. What are your main sources of inspiration? I'm inspired by Japanese kawaii characters, wordplay, cliches, urban legends, and Dr. Seuss. What new idea (in or outside of your field) has excited you most recently? This isn't really a new idea, but it seems that more people are doing stop-motion animation with various materials lately. I can't wait to experiment with this myself! What is your motto? No one's too old for a toy.Links:Website: http://mochimochiland.com/Twitter: http://twitter.com/mochimochilandFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mochimochi-Land/118551290274Other: http://www.ravelry.com/people/MochimochilandPhoto Credit: Brandi SimonsRead the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in Maker Faire | Digg this! blog.craftzine.com |
