How-To: Print on Fabric with an Inkjet Printer
By Andrew LewisSometimes I have a great idea for a textile project, but I get put off by the thought of trawling through the seemingly endless bolts of fabric at the store. Then I think about the hassle of haggling over the price and ending up with three times as much fabric as I actually needed.I decided to try printing my own fabric on an inkjet printer, and the results really exceeded my expectations. The advantages to this technique are tremendous, and I don't have to haggle over prices any more.I get my own designs, in the quantity I need, at a fraction of the price I would normally pay. The only drawback is that people keep asking me to print something special for them, too!Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | blog.craftzine.com |
Yarn Bombing: Mustache
I love the touch of whimsy this yarn-bombed mustache from Flickr user, sara_mc, gives to this massive brick statue in Indianapolis. I got in touch with Sara to learn more about the project. April Duncanson started a weekly knitting group that met in Broad Rippple in Indianapolis called Pick Two (name inspired by our original meeting place, Panera and their "Pick Two" menu option). As a group, we talked about taking on a yarn bombing project for a long time, but hadn't gotten around to it.When our fearless leader announced that she was relocating to Philadelphia, we started secret plans to knit a group project for her. Since she could knit anything she wanted for herself, we chose to surprise her with a yarn bomb in her honor. We decided on knitting up a multi-colored moustache to adorn James Tyler's Brickhead 3. The giant head sculpture is in Davlan Park on the 400 block of Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis. We lovingly nicknamed him Burt (as in Reynolds, of course). What a fun tribute! I love it! By Diane GillelandThis project starts with jewelry gourds, which are tiny little hardshell gourds with wonderful shapes.
