Felted Seascape Celebrates Summer
Our pal Holly White-Wolfe over at Sono-ma.com points to this awesome seascape created by Monica Ashley to celebrate the solstice and the arrival of summer. To which I say: "Felted friends, the beach, cool breezes, and plenty of sunshine. Hallelujah!"Monica also offers summer art camps for kids in the San Francisco Bay Area, with cool themes like Down by the Sea, Fairies, Gnomes & Elves, and Birds, Butterflies & Frogs. They all sound fun to me.Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | blog.craftzine.com |
Alexis Anne Mackenzie
San Francisco artist Alexis Anne Mackenzie aptly calls herself a "paper surgeon." All of her work is done by hand, painstakingly clipped from books and artfully assembled to spell visually enigmatic words or phrases. One can decipher these messages simply by reading the artwork titles, though of course this spoils the fun of trying to see beyond the anatomical and botanical assemblage.Technically they are collages, but I've never enjoyed describing them in those terms ... I feel like there is a general concept out there of what collage is and tends to look like, which doesn't apply to what I do at all. My general intent, throughout all my work, is to portray the world as a flawed thing of beauty -- a place that shines brightly, but has a dark side to match. You can read more at Fecal Face and The Beholder. For more collage(esque) goodness -- and happily there is a lot of it! -- check out her blog, Cocoon Balloon, and her flickr. I hope to meet you one day in SF, Alexis! How-To: Oat-Free, Grain-Free Trail Bars
Jan DiCintio of Daisy Jane shares a tasty-looking recipe for these oat-free, grain free trail bars. Why no grains? The answer is multi-layered, but here's the basic idea. We work hard and workout harder - we live life fully and need foods that keep us feeling light and spry. Through experimenting with our diet, we observed that grain foods tend to make us feel full, bloated and lethargic. Although we've always eaten healthfully, we still felt like there was something else - something we weren't getting right - that would allow us to harness and maintain regular energy levels rather than sapping them. In addition, I have an intolerance to grains, esp oats, that had worsened markedly this past year. I cut out all grains to see if my symptoms were alleviated, and wow - what a difference! Symptoms gone and tons of energy to boot! We don't miss it at all!Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in Food | Digg this! blog.craftzine.com |
