Levi's Workshop in San Francisco
In the heart of San Francisco's artistic Mission District is Levi's Workshop a new kind of hands-on gallery that is celebrating the history of print and design from now through the end of August. I was amazed when I stepped inside how open the space was and how readily available the staff were to show you demos of vintage printers or give you a quick lesson in silkscreening. (I'll admit I could have spent a few hours there playing with the silkscreening station myself!) Joshua Katz's of Levi's remarked on opening night how amazing the DIY atmosphere was with everyone stamping to xeroxing their own 'zines. It's a great way to spend a crafty afternoon and getting lunch or brunch at some of the Mission's best food places (Bar Tartine, Ti Couz, Delfina, etc.) Here are some of my favorite parts of Levi's Workshop:I loved seeing the old Vandercook printing press that's run by a hand-crank. To see these historic machines still working was worth the trip to visit the gallery. They were printing out a nice poster-sized Levi's Workshop calendar of events. It was so inspiring to see all these 'zines on display. It's an artform I hope continues on in our digital age.More photos after the jump!Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in Design | Digg this! blog.craftzine.com |
My First Sashiko Embroidery Kit
While I was at the Maker Faire Detroit, I picked up a sweet Japanese embroidery kit from Tadaa Studios. It's called Sashiko which translates to "little stabs" so it really is the perfect embroidery for me, the chronic needlefelter. The technique involves stacking up stitches on a long needle to create perfect little dashes. The kit I chose includes the pattern printed on lightweight linen, a needle and 6 colors of thread. Before I got started, I spent some time clicking through the Sashiko Pool on Flickr and I found great inspiration there. My goal is to have this beauty stitched up before my next blog post tomorrow evening so that I can share my results. The sewing is so simple and the design is so engaging that I shouldn't have any trouble at all- I think the hard part will be deciding what to do with my completed piece!Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in Embroidery | Digg this! blog.craftzine.com |

DIY La Roux Laser Cameo Necklace
For Halloween I'm dressing as Elly Jackson from the pop-synth group La Roux. Elly wears a "neo cameo" necklace by Australian designer Sylvie Markovina, consisting of two layers of laser-cut acrylic on a brass chain. With a flick of my vector graphics muscles and access to a laser cutter, I made my own version to wear with my Piet Mondrian-inspired jacket from the video for Bulletproof (check back for a tutorial on that soon). You can download the .eps files from Thingiverse to make your own.Inspired to craft something for Halloween? Be sure to enter it in our CRAFT Halloween contest to win cool prizes.
