How-To: Zine-Making for Kids
By Diane GillelandZines (short for "fanzines" or "magazines") are self-published booklets about any subject that grabs you. (Seriously, you can find a zine about just about anything.) There's a rich zine culture around the world, where music fans, writers, comic book artists, citizen journalists, poets, and others of every stripe are making, trading, and selling their creations.Zine-making is also a fantastic activity for kids. Not only are zines a fun means of creative expression, making them gives kids a little insight into how published books and magazines are made, and may help them think more critically about what goes into those mainstream publications. Here are some fun ways to create zine-making experiences for kids of all ages.Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in CRAFT Summer Camp | Digg this!

Book Garden Installation Includes Growing Mushrooms
I'm in awe of this art installation in a library's garden that's comprised of more than 40,000 discarded books. Even more fascinating: the books are being used as a growing medium for mushrooms. Designed by a Berlin-based team of Canadian artist-designer Rodney LaTourelle and landscape architect Thilo Folkerts, the Jardin de la Conaissance (Garden of Knowledge) seeks to introduce the book as not only a structural garden element of wall, bench and bed, but also as a growing medium.Sandwiched within and between the reclaimed and decomposing books are several edible species of mushrooms like oyster and winecap, an intervention that highlights the living, ephemeral and cyclic character of these artefacts.[via unconsumption]Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in Arts & Design | Digg this!

Playful Craft Fair Displays
Amy Bem, of Bem & Gene, did a great job mixing in vintage toys with this display of kid-friendly bibs and clothing she made this weekend at the DIY Street Fair in Ferndale, Mich. Her display was a lot of fun to look through and was a perfect addition to her offering of handmade and vintage children's clothing. (And yes, I played with the bunny.)Read the Full Story » | More on CRAFT » | Comments » | Read more articles in Kids | Digg this!
